ERCIS C³M @ ISCRAM2017

Members of the C³M have organised a workshop and presented three papers at the 14th International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management (ISCRAM2017). The conference aims at exploring all dimensions of the Information Systems domain to improve and contribute to Crisis and Disaster Management. It took place in Albi, France, from the 21st until the 24th of May.

The conference started on Sunday with a day dedicated to workshops, a doctoral symposium and tutorials. ERCIS C³M offered a workshop about “Transport and Logistics Management in Crisis Situations” in collaboration with the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). The aim of the workshop was to demonstrate and discuss different approaches for logistics and transportation issues within crisis management. Researches and practitioners have been invited to present existing practices, tools and solutions. As a starting point, ERCIS C³M and DLR demonstrated two tool-suites (KeepOperational and HumLog) based on a practical experiment, which has been conducted in cooperation with the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) within the EU-funded collaborative demonstration project DRIVER (Driving Innovation in Crisis Management for European Resilience). Furthermore, Raphael Oger presented a simulation tool for supply chain agility, which is based on the IODA platform, and Laura Laguna-Salvado showed her work related to the development of an IFRC monitoring dashboard.

The second part of the workshop was an interactive session where participants got the opportunity to have a deeper look into the presented solutions and get some hands-on experience with them. The fair-like setting led to many constructive and insightful discussions, where interested participants as well as solution providers could ask questions, express their impressions and ideas, and give valuable feedback. Overall, the workshop has been a great experience, was able to offer new insights to all participants, and allowed the identification of learning and collaboration potentials of the participants working in transport and logistics management in crisis situations.

Besides three outstanding key notes and a great conference program by the Albi team, the following three days were dedicated to presentations and discussions of the accepted papers. There have also been three papers presebred by ERCIS C³M members. Two of them have been presented during the track "Logistics and Supply Chain Management in Crisis Response" chaired by Jacques Lamothe from École des Mines d’Albi-Carmaux and Adam Widera from the ERCIS C³M.The first paper deals with integrated logistics and transport planning in disaster relief operations and the second one with assessing vendor managed inventory for humanitarian organizations. The third paper is about a literature review on collaboration among humanitarian relief organizations and volunteer technical communities and has been presented during a track concerned with future developments and innovations. More detailed information about all three papers can be found below.

Overall, the ISCRAM conference has been a great experience including not only the workshop and paper presentations but also interesting keynotes, a practitioners’ master class or round tables. Moreover, the organizing team did a great job by offering different social events (e.g. the visit of a vineyard or a gala dinner at an impressive castle) where everyone came together, engaged in lively discussions and spend a good time together.
